Newport RI Revisited
If you have never been to Newport, this is a must visit and if you visited years ago, think about returning to a beautiful
destination full of wonderful places to stay, dine and sightsee. Thanks to the legendary Doris Duke and her friend,
hundreds of homes from the 1700’s have been restored. The Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF), which
they started, is also in charge of many of the mansions built during the late 1800’s – early 1900’s as summer cottages
for billionaire tycoons.
We revisited the famous Vanderbilt home, “The Breakers” and were not impressed this time. They are using
earphones for tours rather than personal guides. The fixtures and the furniture were just too heavy, but the location on
the sea, however, is spectacular.
Jackie Kennedy’s mother’s home, Hammersmith Farms, is not open anymore due to a new owner. This was
disappointing. You must visit Rough Point, Doris Duke’s Newport home with its charming, beautiful location on the
famous Cliff Walk. It was built by the youngest Vanderbilt brother at the end of the 19th Century and purchased
soon after by Doris Duke’s father. Knowledgeable, personal guides will answer your questions and tell you interesting
stories. She was a discriminating collector of Chinese and French antiques. Her bedroom has an original Renoir and
all the furniture is covered with Mother of Pearl. The beautiful gardens are originally designed by Olmstead who did
many famous gardens including Central Park and our own “Emerald Necklace”.
We had dinner at the lovely restaurant of the Castle Hill Hotel – one of the nicest places to stay. We also dined at
the acclaimed Spiced Pear restaurant in another delightful hotel, The Chanler at Cliff Walk which is a Relais &
Chateaux and a Virtuoso property.
Don’t wait to visit! Please call us to make your hotel reservations. There is enough to see and do for as many days as
you would like. On my next visit, I intend to try the train and cruise tour along Narragansett Bay.
A luxurious new hotel and spa has just opened in Watch Hill, RI. I am invited to the opening – watch for an update
We look forward to your call for this or for travel anywhere in the world.
